This year on March 8th, Two Hat joins our industry partners and peers to celebrate the 110th International Women’s Day! The theme of International Women’s Day 2021 is #ChooseToChallenge, to recognize and celebrate the achievements of women, while advocating for gender balance in the workplace and beyond.
Two Hat proudly embraces, promotes, and advocates for diversity and equality both internally and in online communities. We strive to be a leader in amplifying women in tech, we are proud that 49% of our team and 60% of our leadership funnel are persons identifying as female.
In honor of International Women’s Day we connected with Melissa Loerke, VP of Client Success and Language & Culture, for a‘Q and A’ on women in business and technology. Having spent her career in public service, it was our Founder’s vision that compelled Melissa to make the jump to the technology sector, “how we treat each other matters and I believe we should want our online communities to be healthy and safe the same way we do IRL”.
Q. What are some of the challenges for women in tech?
A. Getting your first opportunity then career growth. Also, achieving work-life balance.
Q. Can you share two areas of business you are passionate about specific to women in leadership?
A. Building great teams is about getting the right people in the right role – for me, it’s about removing any barriers (conscious or not) that prevent great talent from getting great opportunities. It’s a balance of being bold to challenge why we do what we do and possessing the humility to be challenged ourselves.
Q. What achievements are you most proud of at Two Hat?
A. I think one of our most important accomplishments is the talent that we have at Two Hat. While we are still learning – I am proud of the diverse skill sets and perspectives of our teams. Sixty percent of our leadership pipeline identifies as women, and we also make up nearly 50% of our total headcount. Gender expression is just one piece of diversity – I’m excited for us to continue to strive to be a leader in creating inclusive spaces both as an employer and for our customers.
Q. Can you share a favorite quote to inspire the current and future leaders of women?
A. “You may not always have a comfortable life and you will not always be able to solve all of the world’s problems at once but don’t underestimate the importance you can have because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own.”
– Michelle Obama
Melissa is one of the many members of the Two Hat team that #ChooseToChallenge. We challenge you to question your unconscious biases in your product or platform developments, your recruitment and selection processes, and your behaviors in the workplace. Most importantly, be bold enough to call out inequality in person and in online communities – together we can make the world a better place.
